Our furniture

The beauty of natural wood

Our furniture is produced exclusively for Myakka in Rajasthan, northern India using either Sheesham (also known as Indian Rosewood) or Acacia wood. Both are fast-growing hardwoods, sourced from sustainable, government managed plantations. Being a hard wood, you can be safe in the knowledge that this functional furniture can deal with the stresses and strains of everyday use and still look fantastic!

Please appreciate that as each item is handmade, it is natural that there will be slight variations in grain and colour from piece to piece: this is part of the uniqueness and charm. With the exception of the Bombay range, our furniture is traditionally hand waxed, not varnished or lacquered. Therefore, as with any waxed furniture, we recommend that you use coasters or mats to protect from marks caused by hot or wet items.

We currently offer four different ranges of furniture:

Mallani Range – This range of Sheesham (Indian Rosewood) furniture is made exclusively for Myakka. The clean, elegant shapes, rich colour and rectangular metal handles are distinctly different to other Indian furniture ranges and harmonise with both antique and contemporary settings. The natural lustre of the wood is highlighted by the hand waxed finish.

Thakat Range – Pronounced ‘Tack-at’, this classic Indian furniture features beautiful turned legs and ironwork detail that bring the character and charm of the East into your home. The wood is Sheehsam (Indian Rosewood), hand waxed to give a beautiful, deep shine. Produced for Myakka to the highest standard, you can rest assured that our Thakat range is made only from the highest grade Sheesham wood, well seasoned and hand finished by skilled craftsmen, using traditional methods.

Khimsar Range – Especially made for Myakka, Khimsar’s Acacia wood has a naturally lighter colour than the Sheesham used for our other ranges. Many customers comment that the warm colour sits well with other woods in their home, especially pine. It features less ornamentation than most Indian designs, with attractive broad legs, aged aluminium metalware and a rich wax finish.

Bombay Range – Designed with loft living in mind, Bombay is an exclusive range of Acacia furniture in a modern style, with aluminium handles and clean lines without overhangs. Unlike most Indian furniture, this collection has contemporary features such as adjustable height shelving and metal drawer runners. It is completed in a dark walnut stain and a lacquered finish that resists marks from liquids and hot items.

How should I care for my furniture?

For the best protection and years of happy use, we would recommend you follow these care instructions:

Mallani & Thakat Ranges – Sheesham wood, stained and hand waxed finish.

  • Wax occasionally – we recommend Mylands Antique Mahogany Wax which will help develop the colour as well as protect your furniture.
  • As with any solid wood item, positioning in direct sunlight or near a heat source can cause movement or cracking of the wood.
  • The furniture is not sealed, so ensure you protect surfaces from hot or wet items which will cause ring marks.
  • Should you get any ring marks, these can however be polished out using Mylands Antique Mahogany Wax and some fine wire wool (grade 0000).

Khimsar Range - Acacia wood, stained and hand waxed finish.

  • Wax occasionally – we recommend Mylands Clear Wax which will help maintain the colour & finish. Apply this using a lint free cloth or soft brush, and then buff to a shine.
  • As with any solid wood item, positioning in direct sunlight or near a heat source can cause movement or cracking of the wood and should be avoided if possible.
  • The furniture is not sealed, so ensure you protect surfaces from hot or wet items which will cause ring marks.
  • Should you get any ring marks, these can however be polished out using Mylands Clear Wax and some fine wire wool (grade 0000).

Bombay Range - Acacia wood, completed with dark walnut stain and lacquered finish.

Being finished with a heat & water resistant lacquer, this range does not require any special care products; simply use a duster or damp cloth. As with any solid wood item, positioning in direct sunlight or near a heat source can cause movement or cracking of the wood, so should be avoided if possible.

Dimensions...
  • All dimensions are shown in width, depth, height order in centimetres and due to the handmade nature of our products all measurements are approximate to +/- 2cm.
  • Please remember it is your responsibility to ensure that the furniture will physically fit in your home – we urge you to check all access routes to ensure that larger items of furniture can physically be manoeuvred into your home.
  • At times, it may be necessary to make alterations to the specifications of our products and we reserve the right to make such changes. Should this be necessary, we will always do our best to advise you before dispatching your order.
Myakka furniture in the making…

Our furniture is produced in Jodhpur in the state of Rajasthan, Northern India, a community renowned for it’s carving and carpentry skills.

Myakka furniture is made of either Sheesham (also known as Indian Rosewood) or Acacia wood, grown in managed forests in India. The trees are fast growing and are felled after approx. 8-10 years of growth, under government-approved forestry schemes, before being sawn in approved mills and transported to the production unit.

Once in the factory, the wood is chemically treated to eradicate any bugs or pests, before being transferred to a drying kiln where the moisture content is reduced to approx 6-7%. This is a much more effective and reliable form of drying than the sun-drying method that is more commonly used. By drying the wood properly, the future risk of movement & cracking in the wood is greatly reduced.

The sawn wood is then given a uniform thickness, planed, joined and glued to produce uniform planks. These planks are then used by skilled craftsmen to make the individual items. Once completed, each item is sanded and any joints are smoothed before being passed for finishing.

Our furniture is either hand finished with wax or sealed with lacquer according to the specification for the individual range.

Quality Control checks are carried out throughout the entire production process as the product passes from one department to another. This creates a completely transparent chain of responsibility and ensures every piece is finished to the highest standard.

Finally, the furniture is individually wrapped in three layers of protective packaging before being put in cartons. The container is then stuffed at the factory and checked by the Indian Authorities where the doors are sealed until the shipment reaches our warehouse.

From Jodhpur, the container travels by truck or rail to either Mumbai (formerly Bombay) or Mundra, which can take up to 7 days. From here it sails to the UK, taking approximately 3 weeks to reach the British port, where it is processed by UK Customs & Excise and travels by road to our warehouse in Somerset for unloading.
