The Myakka pedigree
18 years of beautifully designed fair trade furniture, forest care and fast delivery.
All our high quality furniture is a friend for life, made from richly grained Sheesham, Acacia, Mango, Monkey Pod and reclaimed pine. These fast growing woods are sourced for us from government managed, sustainable plantations in India, Thailand, Vietnam and beyond. The beautiful wood is kiln dried to stabilise its properties before being waxed by hand to protect and deepen the lustre of the grain. If you'd like a wood sample of any of our ranges please just give us a call on 0345 460 3122 (local rate call) or click here to request online.
We're closely involved in the design of every piece, taking our ideas and your requests to India to discuss them with our furniture makers. Every design is then individually handmade, making every single item entirely unique in grain, colour and original, artistic detail.
Sourcing sustainable timberAt Myakka the golden thread of fair trade reaches a lot further than you may think. We try to take responsibility for every aspect of our work, including all the environmental implications. We are working on independent endorsement and, to date, our main Indian suppliers have earned FSC™ Chain of Custody accreditation. The FSC™ was set up in response to global concerns about deforestation. It helps improve the management of the world's precious forests. Now we just need the final verification for which there's a raft more paperwork awaiting input from the Indian government (a lesson in serene patience for us). More news as we have it...
Where required, we may use small quantities of MDF, for example in some drawer bases or backs of units. Where this is the case, all the MDF is CARB Certified. This material is made of recycled industrial waste and conforms to EU Regulations.
You Buy - We PlantWhile the timber supply comes from Government managed sources, we’re keen to go a step further and plant additional Sheesham to secure supply well into the future. Since 2014, we’ve been working closely with our main Indian supplier to establish a Sheesham replanting programme – a truly grassroots project involving a handful of dedicated individuals, a group of 15 farmers in the state of Haryana and a lot of combined effort. To date, we have 3,800 saplings in the ground with another 4,000 on order for planting before the 2015 rains. Watch this space for more updates as this brilliant project grows...
We're passionate about carbon emissions, packaging and waste recycling. So every year we make headway to reduce our environmental impact even further. We support our community resource centre to keep it local. We import by sea not by air. We package safely but mindfully. We recycle wherever possible. We stay aware that waste is the outdated way.
